User Guide: Terrain Map Generator for RPG Campaigns

Welcome to the Terrain Map Generator!

This tool is designed to help RPG players and game masters create customizable terrain maps tailored to their unique campaigns. Below is a detailed guide on how to use this tool and make the most of its features.

Why Was This Tool Created?

In RPG campaigns, the setting is as crucial as the storyline itself. The terrain and landscape can influence the plot, character decisions, and even the outcomes of battles. This generator provides an easy and interactive way to create these landscapes, ensuring they fit perfectly into your campaign world.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Select Terrain Types
Browse through the available terrain types and click on the ones you want to include in your map. You can see a brief description of each terrain by hovering over it.

  2. Set Probabilities
After selecting your terrains, specify the probability (0-100%) of each terrain appearing on the map. The sum of all probabilities should ideally equal 100%, but the tool will adjust automatically if the total exceeds 100%.

  3. Adjust Grid Size
Set the number of rows and columns for your map. The grid size will determine the level of detail and the overall size of your map. You can choose even numbers between 2 and 40.

  4. Customize Terrain Colors
For each selected terrain, you can customize its color. This allows you to visually differentiate terrains more easily on the generated map.

  5. Generate the Map
Once you’ve made your selections, click “Generate Map.” The tool will create a map based on your chosen terrains, probabilities, and colors.

Additional Features

  • Juxtaposition Probability
Adjust the “Juxtaposition Probability” setting to influence how often similar terrains are placed next to each other. A higher value increases the likelihood that similar terrains will cluster together, but also, as a side effect, that fewer chosen terrain will appear.

  • Dynamic Updates
As you adjust probabilities and colors, the tool dynamically updates the settings to ensure that the map generation reflects your preferences accurately.

How to Save Your Map

  1. Screenshot Method
You can take a screenshot of the map. On most devices, you can use a keyboard shortcut or a snipping tool to capture the image.

  2. Right-Click Save
If you right-click on the map, you may have the option to save the canvas as an image (depending on your browser).

How Probabilities Affect the Results

The probabilities you set directly influence the distribution of terrain types on your map. A higher percentage means that the terrain type is more likely to appear. For example, if you set “Forest” to 50% and “Mountain” to 10%, the map will have significantly more forest tiles than mountain tiles. The tool will normalize these probabilities automatically to ensure a balanced distribution.

Handling Blank Hexagons:

Sometimes, during map generation, you may notice blank hexagons appearing. These empty spaces can occur due to specific probability settings or limitations in terrain selection. You have a few options to address this:

  • Adjust Probabilities: Slightly modify the probabilities of the selected terrains to minimize or eliminate the occurrence of blank hexagons.
  • Assign a Terrain: Decide that these blank hexagons represent a specific terrain (e.g., “Unknown Terrain” or “Unexplored Area”), whether it’s one of the available options or a new terrain of your choice.
  • Manual Editing: After generating the map, you can manually designate what these blank hexagons should represent in your RPG scenario.

Additional Tips

  • Experiment with Settings
Don’t be afraid to experiment with different terrain combinations, colors, and probabilities to see how they affect the map. Each setting can create a vastly different world.

  • Map Size
Adjusting the grid size will increase or decrease the number of tiles on your map, offering more or less detail.

  • Save Regularly
If you’re working on a complex map, save different versions as you go to avoid losing your work.

We hope you enjoy using the Terrain Map Generator and that it enhances your RPG adventures. Happy mapping!
